Optimizing “Product Type” for Google Base

Google likes their product types short and sweet. Your Product Type attribute should be clear and descriptive of the TYPE of product you’re selling. That being the case, we noticed many merchants are using product types that are wrought with lengthy phrases, promotional text, and too many keywords. So to address this we recently changed our internal processing rules so that a product type must be shorter than 40 characters. We feel this gives merchants plenty of room to spell out their product types, and limits those who try and submit a product type that could double as a novella. So make note: If you’re an existing client, you may see an error message pop up the next time you upload. It could likely be due to this change. Simply reduce your product type to 40 characters or less and you’ll be on your way to a potentially better Google Base/Google Product Search experience!
